Truly Beautiful

Beauty is an intangible thing; a word we use to describe something that pleases the eye. Many trees are beautiful because of their form, some because of their colour. Most flowers are beautiful because of their colours but some, like the lily, for their shape and purity.

Given freedom from financial restraint most architects would design a building that they consider beautiful, yet some viewers will think is ugly because beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Beauty is a thing of itself – it is not linked to some other aspect of the object.

I think tigers are beautiful but I would be terrified if one came near me. Sunsets and cloud formations can be so beautiful that I could stare at them for ever, yet they do not last. Most people thought Concorde was beautiful, yet the noise of its takeoff was ghastly.

Saying a thing or person is beautiful does not mean we desire them. Many young girls are beautiful, some are not. Some boys and young men are beautiful, many are not. Some adults too are beautiful – male and female – but most are not. Our eyes look for unwrinkled flesh, graceful movements and elegance of form. So if on this website, I say that this boy is beautiful, it does not mean that I desire him. It just means that he is pleasing to my eyes. In fact, of the handful of young men that have been my lovers throughout my life, I can only think of one that I thought was beautiful and, alas, he was not photogenic so the photo I show of him reveals little of his beauty (No, I won’t name him).

Love for a fellow human being depends far more on their character than their looks.
